LIMINAL HOUSE

On Andros island, architecture is shaped by a subtle yet persistent tension—between the disciplined simplicity of the Cyclades and a landscape defined by water, dense vegetation, and stone.

Within this duality, a hybrid architectural language emerges, suspended between Cycladic restraint and the grounded, tectonic qualities of mainland and mountainous typologies.

The project builds upon this inherent condition. The existing structure—once a farmer’s dwelling, later repurposed as an animal shelter—carries within it a layered narrative of use and transformation. The intervention does not seek to overwrite this history, but to reveal it. Through a series of precise and restrained gestures, the building is reinhabited while preserving the legibility of its past.

At the core of the composition lies the pre-existing threshing floor—a space deeply embedded in Greek vernacular culture, understood as a threshold between man and nature. A place of separation and transition, where wheat is divided from chaff, it embodies the notion of boundary as both physical and symbolic.

This idea of the threshold becomes the project’s central axis, orchestrating the coexistence of contrasts—between old and new, natural and constructed, permanence and transformation. The existing shell enters into a quiet dialogue with a contemporary architectural language, one that remains deeply attuned to the memory, materiality, and latent meanings of the place.
